Chief of the United Nations Mission In Nepal (UNMIN) Ian Martin has hinted that
United Nations Security Council (UNSC) could extend the tenure of the UNMIN. Martin said the UNSC would extend the period of the mission if Nepal government officially requested for the extension of UNMIN's tenure in Nepal.
Talking to the media persons in New York on Friday, UNMIN chief Martin said political parties of Nepal have agreed to the extension of UNMIN's tenure.
The UNMIN chief Matin who is in UN headquarter New York since a few weeks to brief the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the reports of Nepal's peace process also said that the cause of the suspension of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election was not only the demands of the CPN-Maoist but the crisis of trust among the political party was also responsible.
Martin also urged the government of Nepal to announce a new date for the CA elections and also stressed on the continuation of unity of seven political parties.
While briefing Secretary General, Martin had explained the immediate cause of the postponement of the CA elections. He also discussed key concerns expressed by the Secretary-General in his latest report on Nepal. The latest report stated that Nepal is at a crossroads.
The 15-member body had held briefing on Nepal's peace process at UNSC.
