The special session of interim legislature parliament inconclusively ended for today as political parties could not reach consensus on the motion tabled by the Maoist. The meeting is to resume tomorrow at 1 am.
Lawmakers have been holding discussions on the motion tabled by the Maoist that proposed the adoption of the full proportional representative electoral system for the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections and the declaration of republic through the parliament.
In the meeting, lawmakers of Nepali Congress blamed the Maoist for not withdrawing the motion claiming that the motion helped prolong monarch's activities.
Speaking before the session, Congress lawmakers Gopal Man Shrestha accused that the Maoist was violating the norms of interim constitution.
Stating that the issue of full proportional electoral system promoted anarchy, he said seven party should fix the new date for CA elections at the earliest. UML lawmaker Prakash Jwala commented that people's aspiration turned to the frustration.
In the teeth of the criticism, Maoist lawmakers have remained stick with their demands. Maoist lawmaker Bamdev Kshetry said that the Maoist would not budge from its stand warning of launching fresh protest if political parties would not endorse the motion.
Leaders of major parties had stepped up discussions on the sidelines of the special session to reach the ground of consensus. However, due to the rigidity of the major political parties to their stand has been prolonging the conclusion.
Parliament will proceed the motion after the lawmakers conclude speaking.
Maoist's motion of adopting fully proportional representative electoral system and the declaration of republic is almost certain to be decided through the voting in special session of the Interim legislature parliament after Nepali Congress central meeting today decided to go in voting on the issues if the Maoist would not withdraw the motion. On the other hand, UML has been insisting that its amendment proposal should be endorsed.
