The Home Ministry has urged for national and international aid to help Saptakoshi flood victims of eastern Nepal.

According to the Home Ministry, the break in the embankment in Saptakoshi has fully displaced 35,000 people of 6000 families. The minisry also said that the swollen river has inundated four VDCs including Sripur, Haripur, Laukahi and Western Kushaha.

One thousand houses have been swept away and 3000 damaged.

Meanwhile, USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) upon request from US Ambassador Nancy J Powell, has authorised immediate release of $50,000 for providing emergency relief supplies to flood victims.

According to a press release issued by US embassy in Kathmandu, Save the Children, in partnership with the Nepal Red Cross Society, will use the US disaster assistance fund for purchase and transport of relief supplies for people who lost their homes in the flooding.

By using the United States disaster assistance funds for local procurement, relief officials can quickly get the most urgently needed supplies to the needy people, the release said.
