The Government of Nepal (GoN) has decided to feature Mt. Everest’s image on Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 denomination notes.
The cabinet meeting on Monday also decided to replace the crown in the transparent part of the note by the national flower rhododendron.
After this decision by the GoN, the notes of Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 bearing the portrait of the king Gyanendra so far, will be replaced by image of Mt. Everest.
GoN on February 8 had endorsed Nepal Rastra Bank's proposal to use Mt Everest in Rs. 10 notes in place of the King's image.
The sources said the rhododendron will be overprinted on Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 notes which have already been ordered for printing.
Earlier, it was decided to feature the image of Buddha in these notes, but the decision was changed to feature Mt. Everest facing criticism from the Buddhist communities.
