The Government of Japan on Friday, decided to carry out emergency assistance totaling around 4,800,000dollars to help improve Nepal’s humanitarian situation and boost the country’s peace-building.

Issuing a press release, the Japanese Embassy in Nepal said that about 4,400,000 dollars would go to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and about 400,000 dollars to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in response to the UN Common Appeal for Transition Support.

“Since a peace accord was reached and Maoists started to disarm themselves in Nepal, this assistance is to be extended from the need for emergency measures to be taken for children who have been involved in the internal conflict that had lasted for about 11 years and for women who have been suffering from the very poor medical services,” said the release.

According to the release, US$ 2,976,129 will go to UNICEF for ‘Return and Reintegration of Children associated with Armed Forces and Armed Groups,’ and US$ 1,466,160 for  ‘Essential Health Services for emergency-affected Children and Women’ Similarly, US$ 395,365 will go to UNFPA for ‘Delivering essential health care for women in the post conflict situation through mobile Reproductive Health Camps.’

In the release, Japan has said it would continue to extend the assistance to Nepal hoping that Nepal’s humanitarian situation would be improved, democracy would take root and lasting peace would be achieved as early as possible.
