With a view to control various sorts of criminal activities including smuggling the goods, the government has decided to deploy Armed Police Force (APF) personnel along the Nepal-India border.
The meeting of the Council of Minister held on Monday took decision to set up 16 APF Border Security Posts from Jhapa in the eastern Terai to Kanchanpur in the west. However, the strength of the force to be deployed is yet to be finalized.
Most of the new posts will replace Border Security Posts guarded by Nepal Police personnel. Most of such posts were displaced with the escalation of the Maoist insurgency in the Terai region.
The main objective of the decision to set up APF posts is to control increasing activities of dacoits and smugglers and infiltration of criminals into Nepal.
The APF personnel are expected to help the Nepali authorities for effect sound coordination with their Indian counterparts.
Smuggling of goods across Nepal-India border has increased in several transit points due to weak security in the boarder areas.
