CAN Info-tech 2007 begins with the motto of e-Nepal New Nepal

The "CAN Info-tech 2007", the only biggest festival of Information, Communication and Entertainment (ICE) technology kicked off on Tuesday at Birendra International Convention Center(BICC) of the capital.

Saroj Devkota, vice chairperson of the High Level Commission for Information Technology inaugurated the festival amidst a function. In his inaugural speech Devkota said the government was serious to apply the e-governance system in Nepal stating that the government has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Bank having a deal of Rs. 5 billion in this regard.

Devkota also opined that rural people's access to the information and communication technology was essential for the development of the country. "We talk about the global digital divide but there is a digital divide even between Kathmandu and Jumla. If we collectively converge our effort, we can fill this divide"- he said.

On the occasion, Biplab Man Singh, president of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), the organizer, said that CAN has assumed the establishment of e-Nepal and e-citizen that could ease the access of ordinary people in each sectors of the state.

"However the establishment of e-Nepal is challenging and no one individually can translate this ambition. We can establish e-Nepal if all sectors continue this support" he said.

President Singh also said that if Nepal could make itself a digital transit point learning the progress huge neighbors India and China have made in e-commerce and trade, Nepal could accelerate the speedy economic growth.

Conceiving the motto “e-Nepal, New Nepal.”, Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), the apex body of professionals and companies involved in the IT sector has organized the CAN Info-Tech 2007. It is the annual festival of Information, Communication and Entertainment technology that has been organized since 1994.

The latest innovations made in the field of information and communication technology have been showcased at the event. Apart from that, various Internet service providers, IT colleges and other professional training houses have also been displaying their products and services.

As a part, the event has gathered the experts from IT sector who will speak on the relative topics. There will be a live musical concert and blood donation camp at the festival venue. The festival will conclude on 14 January.
