The government of Japan has extended a grant of USD 182,660 to Dhulikhel Medical Institute, Kavre. This grant came under the 'Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme for the Japanese Fiscal Year 2006.
The sum, equivalent to Rs. 12,837,345 will be spent in the hostel construction for the students of the Institute.
The contract was signed between Tsutomu Hiraoka, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal and Dr. Ram K M Shrestha, Hospital Director of Dhulikhel Hospital amidst a function on Monday.
According to the press release issued by Japanese embassy, the grant will be utilized for the construction of a two-storey hostel building consisting 57 rooms.
The release stated that the grant would also cover the cost of procurement of furniture, construction of an access road and drainage, electrification of the hostel building and part landscaping of the construction site.
The total project cost has been estimated Rs. 17.5 million and around 25 would be borne by the Hospital and the community people, according to the release.
The release quoted Tsutomu Hiraoka as saying that Japan has been assisting Nepal in its efforts to alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable economic development including the uplift of the health standards of the Nepalese people.
“I think the Hostel will contribute to improve the environment in which they study and will foster good medical personnel working to improve the medical status of the country, including rural areas," the press release quoted Hiraoka as saying.
