EC to support in peace building and education

European Commission (EC) has agreed to assist Nepal in peace building and education sector. Without mentioning the sum, EC said it sought indications from the government of Nepal on the other areas of priorities to incorporate in Country Strategy Paper (CSP) for 2007-2013.

It has also increased annual development assistance by 20 million euros.

The fifth session of the EC-Nepal Joint Commission held on Wednesday had discussed about the overall political and economic aspects of Nepal and areas of future cooperation between Nepal and EC and area of assistance.

James Moran, Director for Asia of the Directorate General for External Relations of EC, on Thursday said at the press conference that it was good time for assistance as Nepal was heading towards lasting peace. Without mentioning the amount of assistance, he said that the allocation of budget was under discussion and it was fixed once CSP (2007-2013) would be finalized.

A joint press statement released to disclose the issues discussed in the meeting said that both sides underscored the importance of early conclusion of the Doha Development Agenda and renewed their commitment to pursue the matter through bilateral, regional and multilateral efforts.

"Both sides stressed the need to take stock of the many opportunities offered by the thematic and horizontal programs for Asia Which Nepal is increasingly utilizing. They underlined the need to give adequate publicity to there initiatives" the statement read.

The meeting co-chaired by Hira Bahadur Thapa, a joint secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and James Moran had discussed on the political, economic and social development of Nepal.

The meeting has agreed to hold 6th session of Nepal-EC Joint Commission in September 2008.
