The Kathmandu valley saw relief with the resumption of garbage collection from Wednesday. Strewn garbage on the streets of the valley was not picked up for last 13 days.
According to Ravi Marg Shrestha, an official at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) environment department, the payload of 18 garbage-laden trucks languishing at Sisdole for the last two weeks have been dumped at the Sisdole Sanitary Landfill Site on Wednesday.
KMC was unable to pick up the garbage in the valley as the locals of Sisdol of Nuwakot district restricted KMC from dumping the garbage in the sanitary land fill site therein stating that they were unconvinced to the commitments expressed by the government.
The locals have been demanding development works in the locality for allowing garbage disposal. The locals allowed the disposal of garbage on Wednesday after the government made a concrete commitment to set up a health post in the village, initiate the process of electrification and provide vacancies for 20 teachers at local schools within the next seven days.
Similarly, the government also agreed to allocate a budget of Rs. 1 million for the construction of the Aath Mile-Bhanjyan Pokhari road, send required technical human resources to run a veterinary hospital in the locality and formulate necessary laws relating to solid waste management.
A meeting of the eight parties sat in the same day at the Local Development Ministry to discuss the demands of the people living near the land-fill sites and the commitments made by the government to address those demands.
