14 companies compete for 1, 302 MW survey license
A committee constituted by Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) has started work from Monday to make recommendation of the private companies for awarding license to develop hydroelectric projects totaling 1,302 megawatts (MWs).
The committee is mandated to recommend the names of the companies to the government within a month. Fourteen companies are competing for survey licenses of three projects - 600 MW Budhi Gandaki, 402 MW Arun III and 300 MW Upper Karnali.
A report quoted MoWR Joint-Secretary Anup Kumar Upadhyaya, who is member-secretary of the committee as saying that the committee has over 20 parameters to base its recommendations on that includes financial capability, experience, royalty to Nepal, and construction deadline, among others.
The companies competing for the license include Reliance Energy, GMR Energy, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd., Sutlej Jalbidhyut Nigam, Maytas NCC Consortium India, Jayprakash Associates, Larson and Tourbo, Bhilwara Energy Ltd. India, National Hydroelectric Project Corporation of India Ltd., KSK Electricity Finance India Ltd., Athena Consortium, Brackel Corporation Netherlands, Sino Hydro Corporation, and China National Oversees Engineering Corporation.
MoWR had constituted the committee on October 29 last year. The committee had extended deadline on December 15 for applications from interested companies by 45 days. Though the committee's own deadline of 30 days lapsed, it was revived on Wednesday, a week after deadline for applications was over. Ex-Secretary Bhanu Prasad Acharya is coordinating the committee.
