The government has rescued eight Nepali workers imprisoned in Malaysia for a year. Those workers were languished in Malaysian jail following the 'deception of manpower companies' and invalidities of their stays.

The e-kantipur quoted Keshar Bahadur Baniya, director general at Department of Employment and Promotion as saying that the government was to handover those Nepali workers to their family after conducting necessary investigations to find out the guilty in the cases.

According to the victims, they were taken into custody on charges of working in different places from those assigned to them. Mount Everest Manpower Company, Bijulibazaar had sent them to Malaysia for employment purpose.

The report quoted Govinda Thapa, one of the victims, as saying that he had paid Rs. 135,000 to the company to work in a Malaysian ship. According to him, some of the workers were sent using fake passports. They were sent even without signing the contract paper that must include the nature of work, the workplace and salary. The workers were ignorant about the contract procedures prior to go for work.

"While sending me to Malaysia, I was told that I would be there for hailed two years. However, the visa was valid only for a year,” Bijaya Kumar Gurung, another victim from Lamjung was quoted as saying. According to the victims, they were tortured severely while at custody.

Last Wednesday, there were reports about imprisonment of 30 Nepali workers at Malaysian jail. Chandra Bahadur Lama of Belhaniya Village Development Committee (VDC) of Nawalparasi had said his son Indra Bahadur including other Nepali workers were arrested by Malaysian police about 17 months ago.

It was reported that the police arrested them when they were left jobless after a Malaysian cell phone company wherein they used to work was sold.

According to him, Harsha Bahadur Dhenga Magar, an overseas broker had sent his son to Malaysia through Lok Bahadur Aryal of Memorial overseas.
