Nepalgunj riots damaged property worth over Rs. 78 m: Report
A civil investigation committee formed to investigate the incident of Nepalgunj riots of 25-26 December, 2006 has assessed that the property worth over Rs. 78 million was destroyed in the incident.
The report of the committee disclosed on Monday said a total of 211 houses and shops were damaged in the incident. The committee consisting of human rights defenders of Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, in its report, also urged the government to declare Kamal Giri, who was killed in police firing during the violence, a martyr.
It also urged the government to provide Rs. 1 million to late Giri's family as compensatory relief.
"One person was killed and 26 injured in the incident" the report clarified. The committee also suggested the government make a commitment to avoid bandhas (strikes) to ensure that no communal riots would be repeated.
The panel has asked the government to bring to book those responsible for the Nepalgunj incident.
In 25-26 December, Nepalgunj city had seen a violent tension that rose following a scuffle that ensued between Madheshis (people from Terai region) and Pahades (people from Hilly region) during a Madhesh banda (general strike) called by Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandidevi) (NSP-A).
