After conducting a survey under Infrastructure Nepal on the possibility of the railway service from economic, social, geological and environmental perspectives, engineers have renewed their suggestion to construct Birgunj-Kathmandu railway.

Engineer Shankar Nath Rimal at a press conference organized in the capital on Tuesday said construction of railway in this route could ease transportation service making cheaper and affordable.

A host of engineers had carried out the studies under a non-governmental organization called Infrastructure Nepal. The findings of the study were submitted to the then royal government in 2002. According to them, the then royal government cited lack of law to put the study in works but promised to build fast track railways.

Engineer Shambhu Pani Gautam said they had presented the report estimating the total cost at around Rs. 14 billion, including the land cost.

"The present government thought to give it a fresh start and estimated the total cost to be around Rs. 23 billion," Birendra Keshari Pokhrel, chief engineer, said, "If the railway is constructed, it will be fruitful in many sectors."

He also opined it would help boost tourism, use fossil fuel and control pollution.
