SI meeting concludes with Kathmandu declaration, backs ongoing peace process
The meeting of Asia-Pacific committee of the Socialist International issued Kathmandu declaration on Sunday, the concluding day, in support of ongoing peace process in Nepal. It also expressed solidarity with the efforts of the eight parties for peace and democracy in Nepal.
The four point t declaration carried out at the end of the two-day meeting said the committee reaffirmed that the SI would continue to contribute in every way possible to strengthening democracy in Nepal, including support for electoral process in the months ahead.
In the concluding ceremony of the meeting, secretary general Luis Ayala re-affirmed support for the comprehensive peace accord and urged the concerned parties to fully adhere to it.
Ayala also informed the assemblage that the organization will be sending its delegation to observe the proposed elections in mid-June.
On the occasion, Nepali Congress General Secretary Ram Chandra Poudel said the committee strongly backed the eight-party initiatives for peace and called upon the world community for its support to the initiatives.
The committee urged Nepal's political parties and the Maoists to fully abide by the Comprehensive Peace Accord and also stressed the need for strong unity among the eight political parties.
The Committee reaffirmed the fundamental importance of social democratic values and principles - especially solidarity, social justice, human rights, dialogue and international cooperation - in addressing all these challenges.
Similarly, the declaration also spoke on the problem of Bhutanese refugee calling for an end to Bhutan's discriminatory policy against its people based on ethnicity.
The Committee also supported the decision of SI Council in Santiago to establish SI Commission for a Sustainable World Society.
Nepali Congress hosted the two-day meeting of the Committee in Kathmandu.
