Managing Director (MD) of the World Bank, Graeme Wheeler said Nepal should not lose sight of the critical development agenda during the transition period. Talking to the journalist prior to his departure on Friday, Wheeler acknowledged that the government of Nepal has implemented some important reforms and protected past economic and social gains.

Earlier on Thursday, MD Wheeler met with Finance Minister Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat. Wheeler was reported to have emphasized the need for the government to protect reforms and manage the economic and development agenda during the political transition.

They also had discussed the government’s development priorities, ongoing peace process and political resolution to the conflict, and the opening up of development space in rural areas in Nepal.

Earlier the same day, MD Wheeler had assessed the quality of rural development projects in Kavre district and also met with the beneficiaries.

Wheeler had also visited the local micro-hydro power scheme, one of the 120 plants across the nation, to be completed by the month of July with the support of Power Development project financed by World Bank.

MD Wheeler and his delegation had also discussed the impact of the scheme and how the availability of electricity enhanced economic activity and changed the lives of people living in the area.
