Bara tense after one killed, 9 laboureres injured in police firing

At least nine persons were injured after police opened fire on agitating industry workers, who were protesting against police highhandedness at Narayani Rolling Mills at Chatrapur in Bara on Thursday.

Reports said that Kewal Raut, a worker of Surya Nepal Private Limited, died after being beaten up by the police. The injured have been identified as Krishna Yadav, Sahadev Sah, Prakash Rana, Birju Mahato, Hare Ram yadav, Pralahad Tiwari and Kundan Chaudari. One of the nine injured in the clashes is yet to be identified.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Birgunj-based Narayani sub-regional hospital.

Agitating labourers had staged demonstration since early morning Friday to protest police repression. On Thursday police had charged baton against the agitating labourers, who were staging sit-in to protest against the mill management. More than 40 laboureres and three policemen were also injured during the clash between the two sides.

Following the clash, the area has remained tense and agitating labourers have blocked all the industries of Patlaya corridor. They also have called for an indefinite shutdown of industries based in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat district.
