The first president of republican Nepal Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, as the head of the state, observed Bhotojatra of Rato Machhindranath at Jawalakhel, Lalitpur this evening.
It is the first time that president Yadav attended public ceremony after he was designated as the president of Nepal.
Kings used to observe the Bhotejatra in the past as the head of the state. However, the privilege of monarch was transferred to the prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala last year as the officiating head of state after king Gyanendra was stripped of his power in 2006.
President Yadav replaced the privilege from this year as he was elected as the president after the abolition of monarchy.
The Lalitpur District Administration Office had sent an official letter through the home ministry to the president Yadav to observe the traditional of Rato Machhindranath in Lalitpur.
According to the Jatra rituals, the head of the state has to worship the Machhindranath, Shree Bhairab, Shree Ganesh, and Shree Kumari among others on the occasion.
