Fourteen people including the policemen have been injured when a row broke out during chariot pulling on the occasion of Bisket festival. The festival had begun on Tuesday in Bhaktapur.
All injured have been sent to the hospital, said District Police Office Bhaktapur. Of them, one is said to be seriously injured and undergoing treatment in the hospital. The dispute had begun at 6.30 pm when the two groups of people had quarreled to pull the chariot. The two groups had whirled pebbles, stones and bricks to each other while they were about to pull the procession. In addition, they had vandalized the nearby shops.
According to Bhaktinath Majhi of Metropolitan Police Circle Bhaktapur, around 500 policemen have been deployed in the festival to maintain law and order. Police had interfered to ease the row at 8.30 pm in the evening and twelve people have been detained.
Bisket Jatra is the most spectacular festival of Bhaktapur. It is said that this festival was begun to celebrate after after the death of serpents, serpents described in various legends. This festival is celebrated mainly in Bhaktapur and Thimi with Chariot festival, tongue boring festival and with music and dances in other parts of the valley as well.
