Local businessmen, workers and locals on Monday have shutdown Birgunj bazaar, protesting the killing of a worker and demanding security in the town.
The main bazaar areas including Adarshanagaar, Ghantaghar, Maisthan and Al-Shia Math remained closed and traffic obstructed due to the strike led by the Birgunj chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Camber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
The disappointed businessmen forced people to close their shops from 11 am at main bazaar areas.
On Sunday evening, Jang Bahadur Thakur, an employee of the Om Bastralaya, a cloth shop, was killed when an unidentified gang of six armed person opened fire indiscriminately at Chachan Market in the busy Adarsha Nagar bazaar of Birgunj sub-metropolis.
The killed person was an Indian national hailing from Bihar. He was killed when he tried to resist the gang. Shop owner Niraj Chachan had also sustained bullet injuries in the firing.
The gang had also detonated three socket bombs while fleeing after the shooting.
According to a report, notorious Indian criminal Munna Sharma has owned up the responsibility.
Meanwhile, protesting against killing of a local trader, Mohan Gautam, locals of Saptari on Monday obstructed traffic on the east-west highway. Gautam was killed by Cadres of the Janatantrik terai Mukti Morcha led by Jwala Singh on Sunday night, a day after his abduction from Sitapur village.
