The first conference on Inter-Country Adoption has concluded with four point declaration in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The three days long conference that held amidst the growing criticism that sending orphans to abroad for adoption from Nepal is 'fostering as baby business', and 'transaction of bribe money', has also appealed the government of Nepal to ratify Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption and the adoption of national laws and mechanisms to regulate in-country and inter-country adoption .
Hague Convention is the convention that sides the rights to the child adoption and protection. The conference has urged the government to secure rights to child adoption and rights to child rights of entire Nepali children. Child adoption was legalized after Nepal amended Civil Act in 1977.
The conference has also asserted the urgency of setting up National Information Center to disseminate information pertaining to child adoption.
Speaking in the concluding ceremony of the conference, State Minister for Women, Child and Social Welfare Urmila Aryal expressed the commitment that the government would immediately initiate works as per the suggestions pointed out by the conference.
150 representatives from 25 nations including Canada, Sweden, UK, Poland, Romania, and India had participated the conference. Similarly, children of Nepali origin adopted by adaptive parents from America, Italy, Spain, France, Norway, Switzerland, Netherland, Denmark and Belgium among other were also present in the conference.
