The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Friday registered a case against the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and Executive Director of NRB’s Bank Financial Institutions Regulation Department Surendra Man Pradhan at special court.

Accoring to a report, they have been charged of embezzling Rs 195.319 million that Nepal had received in foreign aid for financial sector development.

After the move by the CIAA, both Bhattarai and Pradhan have been automatically suspended.

The police today took Pradhan into custody under the CIAA’s directives and presented him before the court while governor Bhattarai is still at large.

Earlier, the CIAA had also investigated governor Bhattarai for misuse of national coffers during the April movement.

The CIAA has concluded that the Financial Sector Reform Programme headed by Pradhan was not a success due to irregularities, said a report.

The CIAA has filed a case against the two as per the Corruption Control Act 2059 for abusing authority and incurring financial losses to the NRB.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of a two-year prison sentence or calls for the perpetrators to return the claim amount themselves.
