Political leaders and the civil society activists have urged to declare Nepal a democratic republic immediately.

They were speaking in a programme to celebrate the first anniversary of the Loktantra Day organised by the civil society at Basantapur Durbar Square , Kathmandu. t

Addressing the mass meeting, Madhav Kumar Nepal, General Secretary of the CPN (UML) said Nepalese people are eager to establish the democratic republic in Nepal. “By the great sacrifice of the martyr we have reached to this point of political development, now the people want a democratic republic of Nepal”, he said.

Similarly, chairman Prachanda of CPN(M) said that elections of constituent assembly elections is being delayed though the popular mandate of the fusion of people's movement and people's war had desired for the declaration of democratic republic.

"Agreement between the seven parties and the royal palace on April 24 last year had become the main obstacle to establishing republic in the country. But the spirit of the great and historic movement was to establish the democratic republic", Prachanda stated.

Nepali Congress general secretary and minister Ram Chandra Poudel was forced to leave the venue as the mass pelted stones chanted slogan against him. After continued objection by the audience not to allow him speak, Poudel only said the parties would announce Nepal a republic from the first sitting of the constituent assembly.

Former president of the Nepal Bar Association (NBA) Shambhu Thapa asked the leaders to ensure that constituent assembly elections are held on time and the feudal monarchy is uprooted.

President of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) Bishnu Nisthuri said the leaders should go for constitution amendment to pave way for ending the monarchy.
