The government and the CPN-Maoist Wednesday reached an accord to bring down the number of cantoned Maoist fighters by sending 13,000 PLA combatants home out of 30,852.
According to sources, a meeting of the cabinet-formed Cantonment Management Committee has decided to slash the number of the PLA and bring down the number of PLA camps to 7.
A total of 30,852 Maoist combatants have been housed in the 7 main and 21 satellite cantonments across the country.
The move comes in a bid to ease out the process of the Maoist fighters and weapons verification.
The UNMIN has been maintaining that minors in significant numbers are living inside the PLA camps.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee (JMCC)'s decision to start the second phase of the militants and arms verification from early May.
The meeting has also agreed to send home 13,000 fighters with a six-month’s severance pay.
The Maoists have demanded Rs 3000 per month for every fighter for the six month duration while the government has been pushing for 2000.
