The district administration office (DAO) of Kapilvastu on Sunday afternoon clamped an indefinite curfew in Kapilvastu Municipality and surrounding villages after the protests turned violent following the killing of a local politician Mohit Khan by an unidentified gang in the morning.
The curfew imposed by the DAO from 1:30 pm this afternoon would in effect till further notice.
According to reports,the situation in Krishnanagar and Chandrauta worsened after irate locals resorted to vandalism, torched dozens of vehicles, shut the bazaars and clashed with the police to protest the killing. There was also an exchange of fire between the police and the locals.
The demostrators lobbed a bomb at an Armed Police Force (APF) team at Chanuata, killing constable, Hasan Puri, who was going to his room after his duty ended.
An unidentified gang this morning shot dead Mohit Khan at a field near his home at around 8:15am. Khan died on the spot when two persons who came on a motorcycle opened fire at him near Chandranagar in Taulihawa. He was shot in the temple, chest and stomach.
Khan was chairman of the Democratic Madheshi Morcha, district vice-president of the Nepal Family Planning Association and district committee member of the Nepali Congress. He was involved in the retaliatory group against the Maoists during the conflict period. He was also said to have close ties with the palace.
Meanwhile,the DAO of Rupandehi has imposed indefinite curfew in Butwal Municipality from Sunday noon in view of possible violence during the demonstration organised by local residents.
The demonstrators attacked vehicles, shops and government offices due to which the marketplaces had remained shut and vehicles stayed off the roads from morning. A number of vehicles and private houses have been vandalised by the demonstrators.
The DAO imposed the curfew from 2 pm till another notice.
