Following the decision of Constituent Assembly (CA) polls on Nov 22, the Election Commission (EC) on Monday has asked the government to allocate at least Rs 2 billion for conducting the poll.
A news report quoted Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel as saying, “We have asked the government to allocate Rs 2 billion for the purpose of holding election in the budget for the next fiscal year”.
The government had allocated Rs 2 billion for the constituent assembly election in the last fiscal year, too.
“The EC has been busy in finalising the Rule, Directive and Code of Conduct related to the election. The issue of Voters’ Education is also being finalised. Soon, the EC would come up with the timetable for the election,” the report quoted Pokhrel: “We believe that the government would accord high priority to creating a fear-free environment so that all citizens can participate in the election.”
In the news report, Pokhrel also confirmed that the Election Constituency Delimitation Commission report, which the government has decided to review, would not affect the EC’s work in any way.
62 political parties have applied for registration to contest the CA polls, but the EC is yet to decide on the matter.
