Election Commission urges PM for strong security arrangement

Stating that security situation was not better in some districts, Election Commission (EC) has sought an attention of the government in strengthening the security situation for the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections scheduled for April 10.

Holding a meeting with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today morning, a delegation of the EC led by Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel urged for security arrangements for CA elections. Stating that security situation has been improved in some district, the delegation said there was need to take immediate measure in the case of some districts.

The EC officials expressed concerns over the frequent strikes, called by various disgruntled groups in the Terai region targeting the crucial polls, and urged the PM to resolve the problems by inviting these groups for dialogue.

The delegation is also learnt to have apprised the PM that some of the parties were not abiding by the election code of conduct. In response, PM Koirala is learnt to have assured delegation that he would talk with the leaders in this regard. 

Election Commissioner Nil Kantha Uprety informed that they urged the PM to resolve some impediments prevalent in few Terai districts “through dialogue or legal treatment” though the law and order situation has been improving in the districts.
