Educational institutes across the country remained closed since Sunday morning due to an indefinite strike called by Maoist-aligned All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union- Revolutionary (ANNISU-R).
ANNISU-R called the indefinite nationwide closure of all the educational institutions demanding release of its 54 cadres arrested by the police during clashes with rival student union Nepal Student Union (NSU) on Monday at Thapathali engineering college in the capital.
However, ANNISU-R promised not to disturb any ongoing exam.
ANNISU-R students called the indefinite strike beginning today after several rounds of informal talks between the two sides ended inconclusively.
Meanwhile, NSU students today said that they cannot hold talks with ANNISU-R unless the latter withdraw their strike.
The tensions between the two student wings escalated following the severe thrashing of students affiliated to NSU students at Thapathali Campus last Monday. Police had arrested ANNISU-R cadres along with weapons during street protests on Tuesday and Wednesday.
