People of eastern region of Taplejung district have been facing an acute food shortage, a media report said. The Himalayan Times daily said locals of Kalikhola, Sadeba, Surumkhin, Adakhop, Limbudin and other areas of the district are grappling with the problem and left to think on how they could manage two square meals a day.
Quoting Santosh Baniya, a local of Kalikhola district, the report said people in the area were compelled to go to jungles to collect food. Another local Indra Bahadur Rai said stocks of maize have depleted and they were forced to buy foodstuff from other areas.
Locals have to buy food as rice is not produced in those places. Locals bring in food items in the VDCs on Yaks from Tharpu area of the district, the report stated. "The price of foodstuff is very high due to lack of transportation facilities. Yaks, the only means of transport, cannot walk in the rainy season," the report quoted Khem Kumari Rai of Kalikhola VDC as saying.
The report quoted Narendra KC, chief of the Taplejung Food Corporation Office as saying that they could not supply food in the areas as the local depot of the Nepal Food Corporation was inactive.
