A meeting of high-level steering committee of the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) today decided to put off the election of Free Student Union (FSU) scheduled for February 26. The meeting held at CPN-Maoist headquarter Buddha Nagar, Kathmandu decided to put off the FSU elections till Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.
One of the powerful allies of SPA CPM-Maoist had proposed FSU elections stating that students could intensify CA campaigning if the FSU elections would be deferred and FSU elections might be counter productive if it would be held in the threshold of CA elections. Nepal Congress and other smaller parties had expressed no objection to the proposal to FSU elections deferral.
The meeting has also decided not to implement the granting of Rs. 1 million for the MPs for development projects. The Steering Committee took this decision amidst the sharp criticism from different strata.
The meeting has also decided to form the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after bringing an amendment in the constitution before the CA Polls.
Senior SPA leaders including Maoist chairman Prachanda, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Minister for peace and reconstruction Ram Chandra Paudel, Sadbhavana Party (Anandi Devi) leader Sarita Giri, Amik Sherchan of United People's Front Nepal and Narayan Man Bijukche of Nepal Workers Peasant party Party among other were present in the meeting.
