Garment export to United Stats from Nepal during the first quarter of 2007 has slipped by more than half compared to the same period of previous year. The export during this period plunged by 55 percent to US$ 7.82 million. In the same period of 2006, the export had totaled to US$ 17.56 million.

Terai unrest, trade union disputes and eroding competitiveness contributed to this decrease.  Breakdown of the monthly export data of Garment Association Nepal (GAN) shows that the Nepali readymade garment export to the largest apparel market slid by some 47 percent to US$ 2.89 million in March 2007.

The export had dropped more sharply in January and February 2007, with export dropping to 54 and 64 percent respectively.

The decline in export, meanwhile, has dragged the industry down to the second position from the largest foreign currency earning export of the country. Entrepreneurs said lack of committed support from political parties in resolving labor stir and timely addressing measure has pushed the country to a downturn.

The industry received the second jolt after the quota system in global trading of textiles expired in 2005. As a result, Nepali readymade garment export, which totaled to US$ 136.49 million in 2001, rapidly shrunk to US$ 47.77 million in 2006.
