Minister of State for Water Resources Gyanendra Bahadur Kaki has said that hydropower and tourism were two most promising sectors for economic development in Nepal.
Commemorating the inauguration of the 4 MW-strong Khudi Hydropower, Minister Karki stressed to pursue economic agenda along with political settlement.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of Khudi Hydropower Limited (KHL), Gyanendra Lal Pradhan said the National Planning Commission (NPC) needed to upgrade the plans so that Nepal could develop at least 5000 MW power between 2007 and 2017.
"This alone will take the GDP to double digit growth," Pradhan said.
Pradhan opined the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) could develop few thousand megawatts of power on its own leaving private sectors few hundreds MW and the rest come through foreign investment.
Speaking at the same program, Chief of distribution of Hydro Quebec, Andre Boularge said that Nepal should keep its vision alive so that it could succeed. Hydro Quebec is the largest hydropower utility in Canada with the generation capacity totaling 40,000 MW.
The KHL started commercial generation from December, 2006 and is promoted by Butwal Power Company, SCP Hydro International of Canada and Lamjung Electricity Development Company (LEDCO).
The KHL was constructed at the cost of Rs. 560 million at the record time of 15 months amid conflict in Nepal.
