The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Nepal has reminded the Nepal government of the agreement signed between the seven-party alliance and the Maoists to form a high-level commission to probe the whereabouts of involuntarily disappeared people.

Issuing a press statement on the eve of the International Family Day, ICRC Nepal Monday said, “The ICRC continues to encourage the government of Nepal to act in accordance with the agreement made by the 7 Party Alliance and the CPN-M on the 8th of November 2006 to establish a High Level Commission in charge of the question of the missing persons and their families.”

"Today is a day to recognise the importance of families and the families of missing persons in Nepal deserve special attention. More than 800 families are still without any news of the fate of their loved ones. Their suffering needs to be alleviated," the statement quoted Mary Werntz, head of the ICRC in Nepal, as saying.

ICRC said it was ready to provide its experience and expertise in investigating the disappearances. It also called for action by the government to work towards resolution of this painful humanitarian issue.

The ICRC had on 15 February this year published its list of people still reported missing and asked the families of missing persons and the public to check the list and to contact the nearest Red Cross office with any additional information about missing people. Since that time, 131 additional families of the missing have contacted with information on missing persons, ICRC said.
