The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a Grant Assistance of 300 million Yen equivalent to Rs. 182 million and seven 7 hundred thousands to Nepal as Food Aid (KR) of Japan's Fiscal Year 2006.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, Japanese Embassy in Kathmandy said the assistance has been provided with the basic objective of enabling Nepal to procure rice and supply it to the needy living in food deficit districts of Nepal.

The rice will be delivered by the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) through the national distribution network of the Government of Nepal, according to press release.

Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Tsutomu Hiraoka, and Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal Vidyadhar Mallik, signed and exchanged the contract letter on behalf of their respective Governments on Thursday.

Japan has been providing Food Aid to Nepal since 1970. Food Aid is one of the oldest schemes of the Government of Japan, and as of Japan's Fiscal Year 2005, the Government of Japan had extended Food Aid to Nepal 18 times, worth 6.92 billion Japanese Yen.

Ambassador Hiraoka expressed wishes that the Food Aid would ease the difficulties faced by the people in the affected areas. He also said the aid would contribute to further building of atmosphere conducive to consolidating peace in Nepal.
