Visiting former US President Jimmy Carter Friday has opined that Nepal should be declared a republic through the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls in the legal manner.

Carter, during an interaction program with the lawmakers at Singha Durbar, said although all the parties agree to establish a republican set up putting an end to the monarchy, it would be a legal process to declare the country a republic through the CA polls.

He said that any kind of government elected by the Nepali people would be acceptable to the US government.

Meanwhile, Carter also held a brief meet with the Chief of Army Staff Rukmangad Katuwal at the army headquarter in Bhadrakali Friday. The duo discussed the security situation in the country and the amalgamation of the Nepal Army and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Likewise, Carter, who is in Nepal for a four-day visit to assess the peace process in the country, also held meeting with Speaker Subas Chandra Nemwang at the latter’s office in Singhadurbar earlier today morning.
