Due to the festive season, the number of Nepali workers leaving the country for foreign employment has declined by 30.41 percent during Ashoj (mid-September to mid-October) compared to the same month last year.
According to a data compiled by the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE), a total of 10,325 Nepali migrant workers left for 11 various labour destinations during the period. Of the total 362 were women migrant workers.
During the same months last year, a total of 14,837 had flown for various 13 labour destinations.
The data of the DoFE shows that during the period of mid-September to mid-October 3,924 Nepali workers left the country for foreign employment through their personal contacts.
An official at the DoFE said that the decline in the number of outbound workers was propped up by the major festivals, Dashain and Tihar.
At a time when the demand from Malaysia is increasing after the waiver in levy charge, Malaysia took 4,869 work forces becoming the top labour destination for Nepalese migrant workers during the month. Qatar the second popular destination after Malaysia, hired 1,503 individuals.
Likewise, the United Arab Emirates absorbed 1,188, Saudi Arabia 2,119 and Lebanon took 356 women workers. Lebanon is considered as a secure and lucrative labour destination after Israel and Hong Kong for Nepali women workers.
The government is also lobbying with the Hong Kong and Israel government to re-open the countries for Nepali workers. These countries are regarded as the best destinations particularly for Nepalese women workers to work as house maids and caregivers, respectively.
