The government of Japan on Wednesday has decided to extend $ 51,277 (approximately Rs 3.5 million) for a project to support working children’s rights and welfare.
The assistance will be used under the Shapla Neer-Citizens’ Committee in Japan for Overseas Support to implement the project for the “Alleviation of Difficulties of the Working Children" in Lalitpur district in coordination with a local NGO – The Center to Assist & Protect Child Rights of Nepal (CAPCRON).
Mr. Tatsuo Mizuno, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Ms. Yukiko Fujisaki, Resident Representative of Shapla Neer – Nepal Office signed and exchanged a grant contract to this effect.
According to a press release issued by Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu, Shapla Neer will utilize the grant exclusively to improve the environment of children to alleviate difficulties felt under the rapid urbanization in the Kathmandu Valley, and to support children to protect their rights and livelihoods.
Hoping to help reduce poverty, the project has targeted working children who suffer exploitation and abuse by employers, and are left out with regards to opportunities for health, education and economy.
A similar type of program was successful in Bangladesh operated by Shapla Neer.
