Dire situation may erupt in development works: MoLD

Ministry of Local Development (MoLD) has said that a dire situation would erupt in development works if the problem of Terai would not be resolved. The ministry on Thursday said that the development works in the most of the districts of Terai were halted due to the long unrest.

MoLD informed that the meeting of the district council could not be held in several districts due to the political disagreement. Ram Kumar Shrestha, Secretary of the MoLD told this while Interim Legislature Parliament Financial Committee was calling for the activities carried out by the ministry.

Shrestha said the officials such as Local Development Officer, Municipal Official, and engineers were absent in several district as the activities of intimidation, extortion, abduction and killings persisted in Terai.

Shrestha also revealed that one of the staffs who was recently sent to Malangawa of Sarlahi district was threatened for 8 hundred thousand donation. He said that absence of people’s representatives in the local bodies sparked off difficulties in the functioning of the development and construction works.

Secretary Shrestha informed that no secretaries were present in 380 Village Development Committees (VDCs) across the nation. He also informed the ministry has proposed to announce more 42 municipalities in the cuontries.

Responding to the questions put forward by the members of the financial committee, Minister for Local Development Dev Gurung said that local bodies would be formed through political consensus within coming two months sating that the discussions among eight parties in this regard were underway. Minister also expressed that some of the acts were to be amended for speedy pace in development and construction works.
