118th International Labour Day popularly known as May Day is being marked in Nepal today by organising various programmes concerning the rights of the workers.

The slogan of the May Day for this year is “lasting peace and federal democratic set up: the need of the hour; inclusion of all classes and trade union rights must be guaranteed.”

Various public functions, rallies, mass meetings and conferences are being held throughout the nation calling for protection of the rights of workers.

The government has announced a public holiday on the occasion of International Labour Day from this year.

In his message on the occasion of International Labour Day, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that as the workers are the vanguards of the country's prosperity the development and uplift of the country relies on their labour, enthusiasm and ability.

Prime Minister Koirala has also expressed the view that every worker today has to assume the grave responsibility of consolidating the new democratic system established in the country by maintaining sustainable peace and transforming Nepal into a new and prosperous country.

According to statistics, more than eight million agricultural and construction workers, who constitute over 95 per cent of the total labour force in the country, have gone left unnoticed in the economic activities.

Nepal is a signatory of the most of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions and it has expressed its commitment for uplifting the condition of all sorts of labourers.
