The meeting of the eight political parties held on Monday failed to reach consensus on the crucial political issues yet again. Due to the disagreement on setting the date for Constituent Assembly (CA) polls and electoral system, the meeting ended inconclusively. The top leaders have agreed to sit Tuesday to finalize the agendas.
The meeting of eight political parties that was ended inconclusively on Saturday had reached agreement to carry out the common decision to end existing political deadlock and set the date to Constituent Assembly (CA) polls through Monday’s meeting. However, due to the unclear position of some parties, leaders could not carry out the common decision.
CPN UML has been stressing on proportional electoral system while Nepali Congress has been insisting on mixed electoral system.
According to People’s Front vice president Lilamani Pokhrel, even no single issue was decided in Monday’s meeting. He said that Nepali Congress proposed to set the date for the CA polls, however other parties including CPN UML and People’s Front put forward the proposal of reviewing the failure of holding CA polls within the stipulated time in the past before setting the date.
Pokhrel said there was no meaning in setting the date without assuring people that CA polls would be held within the stipulated time.
Pokhrel said they proposed to discuss on the issue of declaring republican set up before fixing the date for CA polls.
Stating that the report of Electoral Constituency Delimitation Committee (ECDC) was itself controversial to the government’s previous decision, Pokhrel informed that the meeting ended with an agreement to come up with positional clarity of each party on Tuesday’s meeting.
The meeting was held at Prime Minister Girija Pradad Koirala’s official residence Baluwatar. Top leaders of eight political parties are slated to sit for another round of talks at 2.30 pm Tuesday.
