Accusing the project management of not implementing the earlier-reached agreement, employees of Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) have padlocked site office of the project in Sindhupalchok district.
The employees associated with Drinking Water Employee Association and Local Employee Forum have jointly padlocked the site office sparking all the works at the site halted.
Nava Raj Basnet, secretary of Local Employee Forum said they resumed the protest as the management remained apathetic to the commitment that project management expressed to the employees.
According to him, the employees had submitted five point memorandum to the project on August 19. In the talks held with the employees on August 22, Executive Director of MWSP had agreed to meet the demands of employees.
The project had assured to meet the demands of the employees that included amendment of Employee Contract Regulations 1999, prioritizing local employees, solving the problems of employees, and regular supervision and monitoring of works.
The employees have also warned of obstructing all the works at the site until the project met their demands. The employees have also barred vehicles of the project from entering the site.
The MWSP is an inter basin water supply project which supplies water from snow fed Melamchi river in the Kosi basin in Sindupalchowk district to the Kathmandu valley. The Project is designed to solve the chronic water supply shortage in the Kathmandu Valley with the diversion of 170 MLD water from the Melamchi River through a 26-km long tunnel. The total cost of MWSP is estimated at about half a billion US dollar.
