Melamchi project staff have suspended all work at the project site in Sindhupalchowk district and returned to Kathmandu following the manhandling of three project officials by locals last Saturday.
The project staff have said that they would not resume work until there is adequate security at the project site and the assailants are brought to book.
"We will not resume work until there is a secure and dignified working environment at the project site," said Khiwaraj Sharma, chief of the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee, at a press meet organized in the capital Wednesday.
Last Saturday, locals brutally beat up three project officials who had reached Phatakshila VDC at the border of Sindhupalchowk and Kavre districts, for a dialogue to restart the project after locals shut down all work, demanding that the project send a dozer for their personal use.
Project staff unanimously blamed the authorities for not paying attention to past misbehavior by locals, which, they claim, ultimately led to this.
