Maoist members of the Interim Legislature-Parliament on Wednesday disrupted the proceedings of the house demanding the immediate formation of the interim government and termination of the government formed Electoral Constituency Delineation Commission (ECDC).

Maoist MPs gheraoed the rostrum, insisting that they would not allow parliamentary proceedings unless it is guaranteed that an interim government would be formed without any further delay.

They moved towards the rostrum after the deputy leader of the CPN-Maoist Parliamentary Party, Dev Gurung, had suggested to Speaker Subas Nembang not to proceed further. The government has not followed provisions of the Interim Constitution, 2007, said Gurung, “by not responding to the directions given by the parliament.”

On March 25, the parliament passed a six-point proposal, brought into motion by the CPN-Maoist, directing the government to reconstitute a high-level probe commission to investigate the Gaur massacre. “The government has to be dissolved, and all of its works should cease,” said Lila Mani Pokhrel of Janamorcha Nepal.

The Maoists’ disruption of proceeding of Parliament is an indication that the coming days would not be smooth for the Koirala-led caretaker government. The House is scheduled to meet again on Friday.

Prime Minister G.P Koirala has held several rounds of bilateral and multilateral parleys with key leaders of the UML, CPN (Maoist) and the Nepali Congress (Democratic), but there was no understanding regarding the distribution of the ministerial berths.
