Workers of Momento Apparels, the country’s largest garment factory, have gone to the streets demanding to fulfill their 16-point demand.
The demands, among others, include payment of salary of the last four months and provident fund of last several years.
The major demands include payment of salary of last four months, payment of provident fund of the last nine years, provision on accident insurance, permanent appointment of all temporary workers and settlement of payment of workers who have resigned.
According to reports, around 1,100 employees of the company, including around 1,000 women workers, marched through Chandragadi on Thursday, chanting slogans and condemning the excesses of the management.
The protestors later staged a sit-in at the Labor Office, in an attempt to draw its attention. On Friday, the agitated employees staged a protest in front of District Administrative Office here and later notified Jaya Mukunda Khanal, chief district officer, about the problem.
The workers have announced that they would stage a sit-in at Mechi Customs Office on Sunday, cease vehicular movement in district headquarters on Monday and call for Jhapa banda if their demands are not fulfilled by Wednesday.
“We had formally informed about our demands to the management about three months ago. However, our calls were not heeded, which forced us to come to the streets,” report quotes Roshani Siwakoti, president of Nepal Independent Textile and Garment Workers Union.
