After emergence of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) as the largest political party, US Ambassador to Nepal Nancy J Powell on Thursday for the first time  held an official meeting with CPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

During the meeting, Powell and Prachanda discussed about the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls results, future relations between the two countries and future plans the CPN-M.

"US ambassador met, yesterday, with CPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to discuss the outcome of the April 10 elections, CPN-M plans for the Constituent Assembly, and the future of US-Nepal relations. This was their first meeting," stated a press release issued by the US embassy in Kathmandu on Friday morning.

The meeting occurred in advance of Powell's return to the US for consultations on US-Nepal relations. She is leaving Nepal on Friday.

Powell had reached Prachanda’s residence at Nayabazaar, Kathmandu to hold consultations. She discussed the future ties between the two countries before leaving for the US to brief about the latest political situation in Nepal and US-Nepal relationship.

"Powell provided an overview of current US government assistance to Nepal designed to help create a more prosperous, democratic, and stable Nepal. She sought assurances that the new government would respect current donor agreements and ensure the safety of those implementing them," the press release added.

"She encouraged Dahal to ensure that all Maoist organizations illustrate their commitment to the political process through their words and actions," said the release further.

According to a source, the Maoist Chairman Prachanda too drew the attention of US ambassador towards the US’s enlisting of the CPN-Maoist in its terrorist watch list.

The US government has not removed the CPN-M from the list of foreign terrorist organization so far.
