District presidents of Nepali Congress (NC) Monday have claimed that the Interim Legislature Parliament can not declare the nation a republic.

In the last day of four-day conclave, they have asserted that it was not possible to announce a republic set up in the country from the Interim Legislature-Parliament itself since that Constituent Assembly (CA) election had the right to decide on the fate of monarchy.

They further said that since the Interim Legislature-Parliament was formed with the mandate of holding the CA elections, it did not have any right to announce the country a republic.

Earlier, in Sunday’s meeting the district heads had urged the party leadership to prepare a republican manifesto in favour of democratic republic.

According to Congress sources, after the meeting is over a press conference will be organized Monday and the formal decision of the party will be publicized.
