After five years of separation, Nepali Congress (NC) and Nepali Congress (Democratic) have become one finally.
President of NC Girija Prasad Koirala and the president of NC-D Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday jointly announced the unification of the two parties and the formation of the unified Nepali Congress at a joint meeting of the two parties at NC headquarters, Sanepa.
The meeting was attended by a large number of party leaders including the only living founder leader of the Nepali Congress Krishna Prasad Bhattarai was also present.
The two leaders also signed on a letter of agreement for the party unification.
Addresing the meeting after party unification, PM Koirala expressed his commitment to maintain the unity for ever so that the party will not have to go through the pains of split again.
Deuba also expressed his commitment to maintain unity in the party.
Saying the unification between NC and NC-D “a dream comes true”, former PM Krishna Prasad Bhattarai urged both Koirala and
Deuba to work in a way that nobody in the party feels sidelined.
The two parties had agreed yesterday to announce unification at the joint mahasamiti meeting today.
NC-D was formed over five years ago after Nepali Congress sacked Deuba from the party in a row over extending emergency period against the Maoists. In the unified party, NC vice-president Sushil Koirala will work as acting president. However, Sher Bahadur Deuba will remain on the third spot in the party hierarchy after PM Koirala and KP Bhattarai.
While vice-presidents of NC-D will Gopal Man Shrestha and Prakash Man Singh will continue as vice presidents in the unified party, it will have four general secretaries. General secretaries of NC Ram Chandra Poudel and KB Gurung, general secretary of NC-D Bimalendra Nidhi and joint general secretary in NC Ram Baran Yadav will work as general secretaries in the unified party.
