Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has reduced nationwide load-shedding by 16 hours per week from Wednesday. NEA reduced load-shedding hours as considerable volume of water collected in the reservoir of two Kulekhani due to the lesser electricity demand than it was forecasted in last month.
According to the NEA, consumers will face load shedding of 24 hours per week. The consumers had been facing load shedding of 40 hours per week. The new schedule has continued day time load shedding as it was. In night time, there will no load shedding.
NEA had estimated that the water level at the Kulekhani reservoir would decrease by eight meters during the last month but the depletion was only two meters due to less demand.
The reservoir feeds the two Kulekhani projects that have a total capacity of 92 megawatts and are the only storage projects in the country.
The actual depletion was only about two meters in the whole month that lesser than NEA's estimation.
Weeks of violence in Terai, which led to suspension of activities in various industrial towns in the southern belt, contributed to saving of power - one of the major factors behind the reduction in load-shedding hours.
