Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has expressed his concern over the ongoing struggle and hunger strike by the journalists and employees of Nepal 1 television channel.
In his conversation with Bishnu Nisthuri, President of Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) the prime minister on Saturday has said has assured to draw the attention of channel management towards fulfilling the demands raised by the agitating journalists.
"I asked the prime minister to make public the government's stance on the agitation by the journalists," reports quote Nisthuri as saying. "The prime minister told me that he was going to call the minister for information and communications to discuss the demands of the journalists and employees."
Nisthuri further warned that the FNJ would be compelled to launch a nation-wide protest if the demands were not addressed.
The journalists and employees of the Nepali-language channel have been protesting against the management of the TV channel for the last 17 days, demanding better working conditions and pay on time.
However, the management, which is in New Delhi, has continued to ignore the demands, according to the agitating journalists.
After their 48-hour hunger strike ended on Saturday, two of the journalists Rishi Dhamala and Raj Kumar Regmi have started an indefinite hunger strike.
Meanwhile, NC (Democractic) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, NC Vice-President Sushil Koirala, NC member Sujata Koirala, PFN Chairman Amik Serchan, NSP (A) leader Hridayesh Tripathi and Ministers Rajendra Mahato and Giriraj Mani Pokharel met the journalists and employees staging a 48-hour hunger strike at the television channel's office in Kathmandu to express their solidarity.
