Nepal, India to review, update 1950 Treaty

Nepal and India on Wednesday have publicised d a 22 -point statement that has announced to review, and update the bilateral treaties including 1950 treaty on peace and friendship between the two countries.

According to the 22-point joint statement issued by the Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and Indian PM Manmohan Singh, a high-level joint committee will be appointed to review the 1950 treaty.

In the joint statement, both PMs have agreed to enhance cooperation in handling cross-border crime and security concerns for which home secretaries will meet soon to implement this decision.

Expressing concern over the damage caused by Koshi flood, they have decided to launch relief and rehabilitation measures for the victims and the reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure. India also announced immediate flood relief of Rs 3.2 billion to the Koshi flood victims.

The agreement also stated that India was ready support Nepal to repair a section of East-West highway breached by the Koshi flood.

As per the agreement, the Indian government will provide a credit of up to Indian rupees 1.5 billion to the Nepal government for the next three months to ensure uninterrupted supplies of petroleum products. India will also lift bans on the export of rice, wheat, maize, sugar and sucrose for quantities agreed with Nepal.

According to the press statement, the Indian government has agreed to implement the Naumure Hydro-electric Project on the Rapti River, among others.

PM 'Prachanda', who is in five-day official visit to India, is returning home on today.
